Policy Statement

REVISED POLICY STATEMENT October 1, 2006

W.W. Boyce Farmers’ Market

Approved by the Board of York Group of Companies, October 23, 2006

The W. W. Boyce Farmers’ Market, located at 665 George Street, Fredericton, NB is owned by the non-profit organization of York County Properties Inc.

The first objective of the Market is to maintain the essential character and atmosphere of a traditional farmers’ market. Additionally, that character is to be that of a marketplace that provides an incubator opportunity for new entrepreneurs to test their small business endeavors.

Vendor selection is drawn primarily from residents of the counties of York, Sunbury, and Queens.

Those persons applying for a Market Permit must make or produce the goods themselves. However, it is recognized that in order to sell on a year-round basis, a Farmer may find it desirable and/or necessary to import produce grown elsewhere or to add to his display, farm or produce items that are produced by others.

It is the full right of York County Properties Inc., through the Market Co-ordinator, to accept or decline any application submitted.  Decision parameters are based on the following guidelines.  Note that reasons for decline are neither public nor provided to applicants.  When applications are declined - decisions are final as rendered.

Application Guideline Parameters:

  • Previous association/history of applicant with W.W. Boyce Farmers’ Market – whether negative or positive
  • Number of other vendors selling the same or similar products
  • Product supply and demand
  • Applicant’s county of residence
  • Products should be of high quality, have a unique nature, and must be self-produced
  • Products should be made individually, not mass produced, and not sold at the retail level
  • Products should enhance the theme of our ‘Farmers Market’
  • Applications from individuals/companies who presently retail their product or service (examples of, but not limited to, restaurant, store) will not be accepted. The only exception may be to farmers.
  • The Market Co-ordinator may request, at his/her discretion, a review of any application with the Committee of the Stallholders’ Association – for their input. Any application affiliated with a parent company/producer will be subject to review by committee.
  • Applications from franchises will not be accepted.
  • Applicants wishing to sell second-hand goods or commercially produced goods, including foodstuffs will not be accepted.
  • Goods and services which cater specifically to "adult" themes are not acceptable or in keeping with the tradition of the Market and stray from the Market's slogan of "Families serving families".
It is understood that establishing percentage limitations in any given product category is too restrictive and precise. Numbers of vendors/products in any category are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Variety is appealing to customers and it is therefore understood that a surplus in any one category is not productive to our customer offering or the business success of Market vendors.

When demand exceeds supply, management has the right to review the product category, selecting additional vendors for that product category.

The operation of one vendor’s business must not interfere with the operation of another vendor’s business. This includes, but is not limited to, the placement of signs, display of goods, and customer lineups.
